Pounding Pumpkin Tee Party

OK friends. This activity is a WINNER! The set up is very simple and it’s not messy. It does look a little like a very popular virus once you’re done, which is a little weird, but let’s call it spooky!

I set up the kids (girl 8, boy 4) with a mat across our dining room table for this one, so I could cook dinner. They played with it for the entirety of the time it took me to cook. It’s great for sharing, taking turns (we did use two hammers from old Melissa and Doug tool sets), hand-eye coordination, and essential skills learning.

Supplies I used:

Lay down a splat mat, or disposable table cloth. We didn’t really need it but I like to get my kiddos into this habit. Add golf tees and wooden hammers to the tray. Position your pumpkin in the center of the mat and let the kids go to town.

My 8YO caught on without instruction. I practiced a few with my 4YO before setting him loose. Did he whack his fingers a couple of times? Oh yeah. But I’m a fan of these controlled environment lessons. Hammer hitting your fingers = OUCH. Good lesson learned for big kid life. And wooden hammer, finger, wooden tee sandwich does not an emergency room trip make. (So far. 😬)

As pinterest-y pumpkin activities go–we rated this one a “10”. In fact, some of the pumpkins we had decorating the front porch started going missing…but I’ve got a pretty good idea whose behind it.

Bonus Book Round Up For October:

We’re big on books around this joint. We have a “library shelf” outside of my home office and this is where I swap out books. The kids love playing library and I have them leave their homemade library cards on the shelf when they trade for a book. It’s a simple little game but they love it. Need some inspo for something similar? Here are some of the books we have on our shelf for October:

Pumpkin Jack by Will Hubbell (affiliate)

Strega Nona Harvest by Tomie dePaulo (affiliate link)

Too Many Pumpkins by Linda White (affiliate link)

The Pumpkin Book by Gail Gibbons (affiliate link)

The Bat Book by Charlotte Milner (affiliate link)

I hope you found this post helpful, inspiring, and most of all TOTALLY DOABLE. Thanks for reading, friends.
