DIY Galaxy Space Dough

There are lots of galaxy dough or space dough recipes floating around Pinterest. I hate the texture of most commercial play dough and have a hard time with how piece-y it can get as it dries. This DIY tutorial utilizes Crayola Model Magic modeling material. You can absolutely use your own homemade dough recipes or Play-Doh brand dough. Personally, I find the modeling material to be less messy and we have a no slime rule in our house (I know! I’m so mean!).

We used two colors of modeling material and for a while our “space” had some fun streaks. It has now been played with enough that the material has mixed into being fully black. I also recommend using a straw to suck the air from the plastic bag you store your material in. Or using plastic wrap. We used plastic wrap. This is week four and our galaxy clay/dough/material is doing great. We used 4 types of glitter from a variety pack but anything with stars could be fun.

Materials:

Crayola Model Magic (affilate)

Star Glitter (affiliate)

Mix glitter and modeling material. We put glitter on top of a smooth surface and then pressed the molding material onto the glitter. We then folded and twisted the clay. It was pretty soothing, actually. The material stretches and twists. In the beginning, it looks thought your clay is just eating your glitter, but we found when we stretched the material it revealed new glitter combinations. I told my 6YO it was like actually exploring space and we just went with it. :)

This material makes a great base for the Safari Ltd. Solar System (affiliate), or for painted solar system rocks and other sensory play.
